Treasure Valley, Idaho, located in the central part of the "Gem" state, and Boise - the capital city - are more than just the potatoes that the area is known for. For a map showing just where Boise is, click here.
"Les Bois," the City of Trees, Boise is the state's largest city, and has truly become a metropolis. Over the last few years, the local population has increased with a number of new large employers having headquarters and major divisions of their companies here. Boise has gained national attention as one of the nation's "best" cities, and many are relocating here for the quality of life we enjoy. Links through this editorial are highlighted for your convenience of browsing.
With this growth have come many new developments in the way of shopping and cultural opportunities. The expansive Towne Square Mall provides a variety of excellent stores and shops. The magnificent Morrison Center regularly features world-class cultural events.
Nearby Nampa is the home of the world famous Snake River Stampede held annually in July. Our stampede is one of the world's largest, and has a brand new indoor facility. Northwest Nazarene University, located in Nampa, is just 20 miles to the west of Boise. NNU is a liberal arts college with an enrollment of about 1,300. Founded in 1914, NNU has been rated in the top 100 liberal arts institutions west of the Mississippi by US News and World Report for two consecutive years. The United States "Endeavor" shuttle astronaut, Rick Hieb is a NNU graduate (as is Russ Stanley).
Albertson College of Idaho in Caldwell, just a few miles West of Nampa, is another fine local liberal arts college. Founded in 1891, Albertson College of Idaho has an enrollment of 750, and features Liberal Arts, Accounting, and Pre-law programs.
Boise State University was established in 1932, and has an enrollment of over 17,000 students. The campus is situated along the beautiful Boise River, and has special programs in Elementary Teacher Education, Business and Accounting. The Taco Bell Arena also rounds out activities with the Shrine Circus, concerts, monster trucks, and other events throughout the year.
The Western Idaho State Fair is held annually in the spacious fairground facility in Garden City. Our agrarian roots are very evident in the exposition displays, 4H activities and shows. Special big name entertainment changes daily at the fair and makes for a high-point of the year in Boise.
Fantastic skiing is available throughout the Gem state, including Bogus Basin, just half hour from the capital city; world renowned Sun Valley, a close two hours away; and Brundage Mountain in McCall only about two hours to the north. Idaho's hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, all summer and winter sports are second to none in recreational opportunities.
